Custom Manufacturing of Tubes for the Packaging Industry
At
Zeman Manufacturing Company,
we specialize in providing innovative solutions to the manufacturing needs of customers across a broad range of industries. In this project, a customer in the packaging industry needed us to manufacture custom fill and inflator tubes for one of their packaging products. Our prior experience making inflator tubes as well as our ability to make and design the necessary fixturing and custom tooling in-house allowed us to complete this project faster and more efficiently than competing manufacturing firms.
Using customer supplied 3D data, we were able to design and manufacture the weld fixture, machining fixture and bend tooling in our machine shop within two weeks. Starting with 10mm OD x 1mm wall 304 seamless stainless steel tube stock, we used a highly accurate fiber laser for cut off and to machine the specified slots. Our fiber laser handles the most demanding tolerances all while maintaining a burr free finish even on 304 stainless. At Zeman, we are the only tube fabricator that can provide production laser tube cutting and machining on tubing as small as 10 mm.
Once cut and machined, the tubes were formed on our bender using the aforementioned bend tooling. After bending, a bracket was TIG welded into place, and the tight-tolerance compound slot was machined into the tube using our CNC machining center. Finally, a precision manufactured delrin plug tip, which we sourced specially for this project, was inserted into the end of the tube.
With a design engineer and certified welder managing the build process, we were able to deliver a final product of outstanding quality and price. Working with 3D CAD models from ProE/Creo and SolidWorks, we closely followed our customer’s specifications and now produce 4,000 of these custom inflator tubes annually for delivery in the Chicagoland area.
