Custom Tube for the Thermocouple Industry


Thermocouples are temperature measuring devices used in a wide range of applications. One of our customers in the food industry asked us to manufacture custom thermocouple probes for them, a project on which we were able to once again display our metal tube fabricating and cutting expertise. At Zeman Manufacturing, we specialize in large rush jobs such as this, and were the only supplier the customer could find that could provide parts delivery in only 3 weeks.

These custom tubes were made from 3/8” diameter 304 stainless steel. Unlike other laser tube cutting, this small OD application was right in our wheel house. Our high precision fiber laser tube cutting machine cut the tube to length and machined the holes and miter cuts. Taking our customers Pro–E model, we were able to program the laser within 15 minutes.

The brazing process utilized a silver braze and oxy-acetylene torch and was the most critical portion of manufacturing; however, we were able to develop an innovative work holding system that provided the necessary compensation to preserve the 90° angle and still maintain an efficient tube brazing process. After inspection, vibratory burnishing and tumbling were used to bring the probes to a bright luster, which was required for cosmetic purposes.

Our diverse set of fabrication disciplines made it possible to manufacture this product under tight lead times. Since the first order we have been delivering these high-quality thermocouples on time, every time, to this Middlefield, CT customer. We currently manufacture 15,000 annually, with lead times of 2 to 3 weeks.
