Custom Tube for the Natural Gas Industry


At Zeman Manufacturing, we’ve been servicing the needs of the natural gas, energy, and heating industries since 1936. In the project highlighted here, we assisted a natural gas industry customer by manufacturing a large quantity of custom tubes. These tubes were designed for use as natural gas pipe stiffeners and combined a number of manufacturing processes.

Manufacturing began with 0.900” diameter, 0.049” thick cold rolled steel which was annealed, drawn, and quenched. Our proprietary tooling for cutoff lathes allowed us to size and machine the barb into the tube sections in the same operation. The barb was a retaining feature meant for the plastic pipe that fit over it and was stiffened by the tube. The tubes then moved onto end forming; in this case they received a flange/90° flare on one end. The other end of the tube then had a nose radius formed. After a thorough inspection, a series of numbers and letters were stamped into each part as identifiers.

Our advanced set of production skills and flexibility in capacity let us deliver this order with an excellent level of quality. Working from 3D CAD drawings from ProE/Creo and SolidWorks, we were able to manufacture 42,000 of these custom tubes and deliver them on schedule. The customer, who is located in the Chicagoland area, was so pleased with our work that we now perform all of their custom tube manufacturing.
